The Multi-Platform Reality
80% of home searchers report using two or more platforms during their search process. This isn't a sign of thorough research—it's a symptom of inadequate tools. Each platform offers incomplete information, forcing users into a fragmented workflow that increases cognitive load and extends search timelines.
The primary frustration cited by respondents centers on information completeness. Users visit Zillow for listings, Redfin for estimates, Google Maps for neighborhood exploration, GreatSchools for education data, and various local sites for market-specific information. No single platform provides the comprehensive view that searchers need to make informed decisions.
"Searching for a home is terribly inefficient; I have 5 tabs opened up to different websites just to get a sense of the neighborhood around a home, and every time I switch the home I have to update everything! It takes me forever."
— Survey respondent, first-time home buyerPlatform Dominance and Dissatisfaction
Our data shows Zillow dominates the market with 82% of searchers using it, followed by Realtor.com (52%) and Apartments.com (37%). Yet this market dominance hasn't translated into user satisfaction—respondents consistently cite frustration with results not matching their actual needs.
The dissatisfaction isn't about missing features—it's about fundamental design philosophy. Current platforms optimize for lead generation and advertising revenue rather than search quality. Users recognize this misalignment and respond with distrust.
What Users Actually Want
When asked about desired search capabilities, respondents consistently described features that don't exist in current platforms:
- Natural language queries: "I want to describe what I'm looking for like I'd tell a friend"
- Visual similarity: "I want to show examples of what I like and find similar homes"
- Integrated context: "I want to ask about the neighborhood without leaving the listing"
- Privacy by default: "I want to search without being contacted by 10 agents"
